George, I share my gratitude for the Lilly Endowment. I was deeply engaged with them during my 15 years serving in the RCA. A side benefit was that, in that initial Sustainng Pastoral Excellence grant our RCA team was privileged to be in a cohort with your team. We learned so much from you and it has led to a long-term relationship. I am grateful for you.

Ken, it was a joy to get to know you and the RCA family through the Sustaining Pastoral Excellence cohort process in Indianapolis, and then the many other times we were together in Grand Rapids with RCA. Do I also remember that we gathered at McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta for a collaboration session between our teams led by Larry McSwain? George

George , I have humbly been blessed to be one of the benefactors of a few of those grants. First through the SPE, and now through our denomination two times. It truly broadened my ministry perspective and helped me tremendously. It also enabled me to help so many others in ministry.

God Bless

Derrick

Derrick, thank you for that affirmation. I owe to you that you shared with your denomination that I wrote the SPE grant to LIlly, and that has resulted in me working with five grants for your denomination. If my memory is correct you also "figuratively" sucker punched one of the pastors in your denomination who missed the first group session. At the second one you nudged him into the ad hoc small group where he would have a shock when one of the pastors introduced himself. Ha! Ha! George

George,

I hope this message finds you doing well. Two questions for you:

1. You mention that you coached someone on how to write Lilly grants. Do you still do that?

2. I serve on the Board of a free medical clinic in Georgia. Do they have grants for healthare also? If so I may be interested in some coaching myself or have someone on our staff that would like to be coached.

Larry, it is good to hear from you. For the most part, Lilly's Religion Division works off of Initiatives they have studied and decided to request grant proposals which they will consider and then fund a few of them. They often pick out organizations they have worked with previously to ask them to pilot a new Initiative. My unscientific observation is that less than 10-15 percent of the grant proposals in a full competitive grant request for proposals from LIlly are funded. They are searching for the best of the best. Unsolicited grant proposal not related to one of their Initiatives would likely receive a kind response, but seldom be considered for funding. So, my coaching is easy. Lilly is wonderful but unlikely to be the direct source of funds for a free medical clinic in Georgia. But I commend you for asking. You do not know if you do not ask. Blessings! George
